Eric
Strachan is a 1979 graduate of the Art Institute of
Fort Lauderdale.While in school he served two internships
with the Miami Herald before starting as a staff photographer
at the Naples Daily News in 1981. Hes beenthere
ever since. As a photographer his work has garnered
numerous awards in the NationalPress Photographers
Association, Florida Press Club and the Florida Society
of Newspaper Editors.He was named director of photography
at the Daily News in 1991 and has helped build and
direct a staff that has gained a national reputation
for strong photojournalism.The Daily News placed second
in 2000 and first in the 1999 and 1995 Picturesof
the Year contest for Editing/Best Use of Pictures,
for newspapers in the25,000-to-150,000 circulation
category. The newspaper received an award of excellence
in 1997.He placed first in feature photography in
the1997 Florida Press Club awards for a picture story
in Haiti. He also covered the American invasion of
Haiti in 1994. In the 1997 Pictures ofthe Year competition,
Strachans portfolio was awarded an Award ofExcellence
for individual newspaper picture editing. In the 2000
POY he won an award of excellence for his editing
of a special section on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.He
was promoted to graphics editor in 1997 and to assistant
managing editor/presentation in 2000. He now oversees
the presentation and design ofthe paper, the photography
department, graphic artists and editorial scanning
department. He was named Designer of the Year for
Scripps Howard newspapers for his work in 2000 and
1998.Strachan has been on the faculty of the Stan
Kalish Picture Editing Workshop for the past five
years.
His hobbies include playing acousitc guitar, scuba
diving, boating and fishing.
